FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q. When can I start?
A. You can apply for your provisional licence up to 2 months before your 17th birthday, but you will not be able to drive until the day of your birthday. Also, you need to have the licence accepted, and in your possession at that time. If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday.
Q. How long will it take to pass?
A. Everyone learns at a different rate, so it is impossible to say. You also need to consider things like how often you are taking lessons, how long those lessons are, whether you are getting private practice. The DSA quote a figure of “about 45 hours of professional training, combined with 22 hours of private practice” to be successful.
Q. My parents only took 16 hours to pass. Why will it take me longer?
A. Driving conditions have changed over the years and the roads have become a lot busier, so the test has become harder to ensure new drivers can drive safely. This includes the introduction of the theory test (1996) and the hazard perception test (2002).
Q. What do I have to do in the theory test?
A. The theory test is a 50-question multiple-choice test. To pass you must answer 43 or more questions correctly within 57 minutes. Questions are chosen at random from a bank of over 1,000 questions, and you answer by touching the screen. During the test you have the option to skip questions and return to them later. Immediately after your theory test, you'll watch a series of 14 one-minute video clips, each showing potential hazards involving road conditions, pedestrians or road users. There are 15 hazards to identify and you can score up to 5 points on each one, depending on how quickly you identify them. You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass.
Q. What will I have to do in the practical test?
A. First of all, you need to pass the eyesight test – reading a number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres (or 67 feet). Then you will be asked two “show me/tell me” questions – basic vehicle safety and maintenance questions. The main part of the test is to demonstrate your ability to drive safely and according to the Highway Code. This will include general driving, two reversing manoeuvres and possibly an emergency stop.
Q. How long will the test last for?
A. The standard driving test takes about 40 minutes.
Q. Will I be able to take the test in your car?
A. Yes, if you wish to. Normally this will take the form of a 2 hour lesson, with the second hour being the test. The first hour will be used to get comfortable, and calm any nerves!
Q. What if I want to use a different car?
A. You can take the test in any car, as long as it is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured. It must also have a second mirror for the examiner, and both front seats must have headrests.
