Pass Plus Guide
This article will cover off the six modules you will undertake if you do decided to complete the pass plus driving lessons.
Many new drivers take these lessons as a way of honing their new found skills in some environments they may not have previously faced. Completing the lessons also means new drivers will also see a reduction in the cost of their car insurance. If you wish to read this article click here or see my list of published articles.
Module 1: Introduction and Town Driving
The first module consists of two main parts. Firstly there is a general introduction into the Pass Plus lessons, detailing what the point of the course is, what skills you will pick up and ultimately how these will make you a better driver.
the second part of the module will focus on driving round a town (most likely one you haven’t driven around before).
The key focus here will be on the more complex areas of town driving such as tight side streets, complex junctions and oneway systems. The key aspects you need to keep in mind here are:
- observation, judgement and awareness
- eye contact
- consideration for vulnerable road users
- showing caution
- keeping space around your car
Module 2: All weather driving
The second module is entirely practical and you will cover as many of the different driving conditions as possible given seasonality considerations (e.g. you won’t be able to cover snow in July). You will need to consider the right speed, stopping distances and ensuring you are visible in the following conditions:
- rain
- sleet, snow and ice
- mist and fog
- bright sunshine
When you drive in the rain you will focus on the following aspects of driving in very wet weather:
You’ll also look at skidding, and:
- what causes skids
- how to prevent skids
- correcting slow-speed skids
- braking on poor surfaces
- aquaplaning
Module 3: Countryside Driving
Many new drivers will not have covered driving extensively in the countryside during their driving lessons and how this differs greatly from urban driving. You will pick up the following aspects of rural driving:
- observing the road ahead
- making progress safely
- bends, hills, uneven roads and dead ground
- keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
- safe overtaking
You will also need to show special consideration for:
- pedestrians, horse riders and animals in the road
- farm entrances
- slow moving vehicles
Module 4: Night Time Driving
Depending on your lifestyle and the time of year you took driving lessons, many drivers will have driven extensively at night time. Therfore your driving school may have already adjudged that you have reached the satisfactory level on this module. Assuming you have covered these issues you may not have to cover this module extensively::
- the importance of using headlights correctly
- adjusting to the dark
- judging speed and distance
- the correct use of lights and keeping them clean
- dealing with dazzle
- hard-to-see road users
- parking issues
Module 5: Dual Carriageways
Many drivers will not have driven extensively (if at all) on a dual carriageway (high speed roads where the two carriageways are separated by a central reservation). Therefore you will need to acquire some particular skills for dealing with these type of carriageways:
- effective observation, using your mirrors and checking blind spots
- judgement and planning ahead
- separation distances
- joining and leaving a dual carriageway
- overtaking and lane discipline
- the correct use of speed
Module 6: Driving on motorways
Assuming there is a motorway within suitable driving distance of your house you can complete this as a practical session. If there isn’t then it should be completed as a theory session. In this module, you will cover of:
The topics covered include:
- journey planning
- joining and leaving a motorway, and using slip roads
- safe speeds in different circumstances
- effective observation
- signs, signals and markings
- overtaking and lane discipline
- courtesy to other road users
- motorway fatigue
- breakdown procedures
- use of lights, including hazard warning lights
- debris on the carriageway
- crosswinds
This article should have hopefully cleared up everything you need to know about pass plus driving lessons. If you need any more guidance you can consult Oneway Driving School in Hampshire, who offer pass plus lessons as well as learner driving lessons.
